  WHERE DOES DEER MUSK COME FROM and WHAT DOES IT SMELL LIKE?The term "Musk" is referred to the penetrating animalic substance which is obtained from the musk gland (pod) of the male Musk Deer. There are seven species of Musk Deer that belong to the FAMILY MEMBERS Moschidae of the genus Moschus. This antler-less small deer (20 inches tall) live in forest or shrub areas in the Himalayan mountain regions, stretching out to Central Asia, Nepal, Kashmir, India, Pakistan, Persia, Tibet, China, Siberia and Mongolia. After harvesting, the reddish brown musk paste the scent pod contains, is dried and turns black and granular. The dried musk grains can be tinctured with alcohol or macerated in oil. The fresh musk paste or musk grain is highly animalic pungent, though the aroma of the tincture or oil maceration turns pleasantly animalic musky after the considerable dilution. Musk is a very complex scent and has been described as earthy and woody, animalistic or something akin to the odor of babies’ skin.
